The Red Flags of Narcissistic Abuse in Relationships: A Biblical and Psychological Perspective

Learn how to recognize the red flags of narcissistic abuse in a relationship or marriage. Explore insights from both biblical principles and psychological research, and discover how to walk in truth, not manipulation.

Introduction

I’ve seen it and experienced abuse up close, the charming partner who attends church or leads worship on Sunday, then gaslights and manipulates behind closed doors. The one, male or female, that most people seem to love. Publicly they are saints and privately, sinners. Narcissistic abuse is a silent destroyer. It doesn’t always come with bruises. Sometimes, it’s the twisted Scripture, the emotional rollercoaster, the subtle witchcraft, or the spiritual numbness that reveals the damage.

From a biblical and psychological lens, we must sound the alarm. Because healing starts with awareness, and awareness begins with truth.

“You will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.”

What Is Narcissistic Abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a pattern of manipulative behavior used by someone with narcissistic tendencies or Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). The goal? Control. Dominance. Power, often masked by charm, spirituality, or dependency. Spiritually, it is the spirit of Jezebel, Leviathan, and Python, amongst a Legion of others…

Psychological Signs Include:

  • Gaslighting (causing you question your reality)
  • Love bombing followed by devaluation
  • Emotional blackmail
  • Triangulation (pitting people against each other)
  • Withholding affection or approval
  • Blame-shifting
  • No or low empathy
  • Lack of conscience
  • Lying or causing harm with little or no remorse
  • Leaves a trail of tears, pain, and chaos wherever they go
  • Lives a double life

Biblical Insight:

Scripture warns us about wolves in sheep’s clothing, those who appear godly but deny the truth.

“People will be lovers of themselves…unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control. Have nothing to do with them.” 2 Timothy 3:2–5

Red Flags of Narcissistic Abuse in a Relationship or Marriage

1. Extreme Control Disguised as “Protection”

“I’m just trying to protect you.”
Translation: “I want to isolate you from anyone who might help you think clearly.”

  • Psych Insight: Isolation increases dependency and erodes identity.
  • Biblical Insight: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” – Proverbs 27:17
Healthy love nurtures community, not control.

⚠️ Spiritual Control is a soul cage. God designed connection – not captivity.

2. Gaslighting and Denial of Reality

They lie, deny, and spin the truth, then call you “too sensitive” or “crazy.”

  • Psych Insight: Gaslighting destabilizes your mind and fosters trauma bonds.
  • Biblical Insight: “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” – Isaiah 5:20
Truth matters. Distorting it is not just abuse, it’s demonic.

3. They Never Repent Truly, Only Manipulate & Modify Their Behavior

Narcissists may say “sorry,” but watch the fruit. The fruit doesn’t life. True repentance brings change, not just repeated cycles of harm and more lies.

  • Psych Insight: They lack empathy and see apologies as tools to regain control.
  • Biblical Insight: “If they repent, forgive them.” – Luke 17:3-4
No repentance? No reconciliation. Forgiveness ≠ access.

4. They Use Scripture to Control or Shame You

“Wives, submit to your husbands…” Or “Honor Your Father & Mother” Or “God Hates Divorce!”
Sound familiar? If they only quote verses that benefit their power and silence yours, beware.

  • Psych Insight: This is spiritual abuse, using God’s Word to dominate and shame.
  • Biblical Insight: Jesus never manipulated anyone. In fact, He rebuked religious abusers. God never called you to long suffer in abuse, especially for the sake of an ungodly covenant that God did not put together.
  • Contrary to popular opinion, God did not sanction or ordain every covenant. A marriage or union with a narcissist is a demonic covenant, not build on God’s principles of love, joy, peace…

“Woe to you, teachers of the law… you shut the door of the kingdom.” – Matthew 23:13

📌 What the Bible Doesn’t Say:
God never called you to suffer in silence to prove your loyalty. Forgiveness does not mean forced reconciliation. Submission doesn’t mean enduring abuse.

5. You Feel Drained, Confused, and Spiritually Numb

You’re always on edge. You second-guess yourself. You feel “not enough,” even while doing everything “right.”

  • Psych Insight: This is trauma bonding, addiction to a cycle of abuse and reward.
Think of it as emotional quicksand: the more you try to “fix it,” the deeper you sink.
  • Biblical Insight: “God is not the author of confusion but of peace.” – 1 Corinthians 14:33
Where confusion reigns, spiritual warfare is active.

Why Narcissistic Abuse Often Goes Unnoticed

  • They’re charming in public, abusive in private
  • They play the victim masterfully
  • Churches may push “forgiveness” without accountability

Warning: Environments that avoid confrontation or promote blind submission often enable narcissistic abuse. Those in the narcissistic | Jezebel’s system will teach you to “stay and pray” and encourage you to stay in toxic relationships-to your detriment.

Quick Self-Check: Are You in a Narcissistic Relationship?

  • Do you constantly second-guess your memories?
  • Do they isolate you from family or friends?
  • Have they used Scripture to silence or shame you?
  • Do you feel spiritually disconnected or emotionally exhausted?
  • Is there a cycle of charm → criticism → chaos?

If you said “yes” to 2 or more – this may be more than a “toxic” relationship. This could be narcissistic abuse in disguise.

What Should You Do If You See These Red Flags?

🔎 1. Pray for Clarity and Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God…” – James 1:5

Oftentimes, people say “they are waiting on God”. I heard someone say, “You do not need a rhema word, for what the logos word, already revealed. God did not send you a narcissist but the devil will. Seek God for strategy.

🛡️ 2. Seek Safe Counsel

Not all pastors or friends are equipped. Choose trauma-informed, spiritually mature voices.

📝 3. Document the Behavior

Keep records. Gaslighting makes you question your memories, written evidence can restore clarity.

🚧 4. Set Boundaries Without Guilt

“Guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23

🤝 5. Consider Professional Help

Christian coaches, therapists, and professionals that are trained in narcissistic abuse and trauma can help untangle the web, and help you heal.

Final Thoughts: You Were Not Created for Confusion

Narcissistic abuse is not just a psychological issue, it’s spiritual warfare of epic proportions. It targets your bloodline, your identity, your voice, and your destiny.

But freedom is possible.
Restoration is your portion.
And healing is God’s will for your life.

You weren’t created to be controlled.
You were created to carry glory.
