Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term used to describe the discomfort or tension that arises from holding two or more conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes. It is the feeling of mental discomfort that occurs when a person’s beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors are inconsistent with one another.
When a victim of abuse believes that abuse is wrong but stays in abusive situations. They may experience cognitive dissonance because their belief and behavior are not aligned, and they may try to reduce the dissonance by changing their beliefs, compromising their sanity, or finding other ways to rationalize the abuser’s behavior.
